A humble ambition

For my fifth marathon I am finally trying to do it properly in terms of strength and conditioning. To that end I have joined a gym that is across the road from me, and engaged a personal trainer for four weeks to teach me how to lift weights and generally cop myself on when it comes to strength exercises. I’m not expecting miracles between now and the end of October, the date for the Dublin marathon, but I would like to be able to run the whole thing, and not need to take any walk breaks. That is my humble ambition.

First session tomorrow – no messing around!

    • Yes has to be done. A bit of strength training will do me the world of good.

    Good luck with that Julie.

    • Thanks Mam! Hope the hangover will have fully lifted!!

  2. Great idea – and not a humble ambition. I’ve never known what prevents the need to walk but improving muscle tone and core has got to be well worth a try (and it’s quite fun and generally good for you, I guess). Hope you enjoy it.

    • I am enjoying it so far I have to say, despite the soreness!!

  3. Strength and conditioning will do any runner a power of good. One word of caution is that gyms abound with young ‘gym bunny’ trainers who are mad keen for you to squat, deadlift and bench press. Not much good for runners, and possibly a road to injury. More reps and lighter weights is usually the way to go. Hopefully, if you explain what your goals are, they will help you to achieve them, rather than imposing their own. Best of luck

    • No I told him what I wanted so all good so far. I really just want to learn how to use the various machines so I can continue on myself.
