No more slacking

For some reason I always have trouble with the idea of doing any speed work. I’m not sure why really; I always enjoy it when it’s done. I think it’s more just the effort after working all day. The thought of evening runs never do much for me, so my challenge is to get out and do them.

I was supposed to run last night, but the train was cancelled and I had to get the bus and that delayed me getting home. Then it started to rain so that was the final excuse I needed. This evening was fine and dry, warm really at 20 degrees, so I was going.

I wanted something simple, so after half a mile warm-up I just picked up the pace. I ran the second mile in 9 minutes something, which is pretty fast for me: I am definitely not built for speed. But I told myself I could run fast for a mile and a half and just to get on with it. The bullshit that runs around my head sometimes is pathetic.

I was delighted with myself when I got home. Going to run down to see my parents tomorrow ahead of my 13 miles on Saturday morning. No more slacking off.

  1. The Anal Retentive Runner in me would say that’s tempo or pace running. And that speed work is pacier, with shorter intervals, and often repeated multiple times. But then the ARR can be a bit of an asshole, so I try not to listen to him too much 😉

(PS All running is good, and speed work is a really splendid workout, even for marathon runners)

    • Thanks ARR! Yes i guess it’s pace running, I think I am too wimpy for proper speed work. Unless I went to a track maybe. Pushing myself is the thing. How are you getting on? When is your run again – it’s soon isn’t it?

  2. No need for a track. Fartlek is the way to go. More interesting.

    Race is 10th. Nervy times!
